“The Meaning Behind the Timepiece 787 × Favre Leuba Collaboration”

The colors of the dial are directly inspired by the flag of Puerto Rico—blue and red—representing identity, heritage, and pride. As a Caribbean collector and creator, diving watches are the timepieces we connect with most in Puerto Rico. Living on an island in the Caribbean, the diver is not simply a watch category; it is an essential part of our lifestyle.

The idea behind this project was to create a true dive watch that pays homage to one of Favre Leuba’s icons from the 1960s. Conceived as a revival, the 787 brings back the spirit of the golden era of watchmaking, before the quartz crisis, when tool watches were built with purpose, character, and durability. The case design intentionally references the original proportions and presence of vintage divers from that era, remaining faithful to the aesthetics and philosophy of 1960s watchmaking.

Building on the creative foundations and direction provided by Javier Estremera and Patrik Hoffmann, the design was developed by Kim, who selected this specific dial concept and translated the vision into a cohesive and historically grounded execution. The dial draws inspiration from vintage “bullseye” watches of the 1930s and 1940s—designs that were driven by pure functionality, where strong contrast allowed soldiers and pilots to read the time instantly under high-pressure conditions, with black framing guiding the eye precisely where it was needed.

While the color palette moves away from strict utilitarian contrast, it remains deeply rooted in history. Inspired by vintage printing techniques of the era—when paper was rarely pure white and colors appeared softer—muted grayish-blue tones were chosen, complemented by red accents to highlight key details, echoing the visual language of 1940s advertisements. The blue dial was a very deliberate choice, reflecting a strong personal connection, while the cream leather strap, was selected for the warmth and vintage character it brings. Together, these elements create a timeless, elegant, and unmistakably retro aesthetic that honors the watch’s heritage while expressing a refined, modern interpretation of the collaboration.

Favre Leuba proudly brought back its iconic 1964 Deep Blue in 2024, now reimagined as the Deep Raider, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of one of the maison’s earliest and most legendary dive watches. Originally released during the 1964 Swiss Watch Fair, the Deep Blue was imbued with the zeitgeist of the 1950s and 60s. It was a period when Favre Leuba remained committed to crafting robust, functional watches that were extremely useful for the wearer in any situation, wherever they were in the world. The brand’s advertising slogan at the time perfectly summed up this approach: The Swiss Watch for All Climates.
